Title: Greek Myth and Film

Description: This course examines the texts and iconography of myths from the ancient Graeco-Roman world and their reception in film and television. In particular, students will study original works in translation and then consider adaptions in modern movies and/or tv series. The class will focus on how the texts and figures of the ancient world are reimagined in different times and places in audiovisual media. Attention will be paid to the changes in the stories, texts, and representations for each audience and why these might have occurred. Utilizing modern scholarship and reception studies, students will learn how to analyze texts and films and consider the biases and agenda of ancient and modern creators. This course meets an elective requirement for the Film & Digital Media minor.
