Theater - 1998-1999

The Grapes of Wrath

I would like to create a PDF of this program and make it accessible to download.  This program was ahead of its time in complexity and design.  Since the only copy I know of resides in the archives (and I have been busy working in the FAC) I have not accomplished this task yet.  Cody

The Notebook of Trigorin presents a new look at Chekhov's The Sea Gull. Williams' talent for delving into the psyche of a character is greatly exemplified as he takes these famous Chekhov characters and reworks them to suit his own ideals and purpose. Written late in Williams' career, the play was a project that he had wanted to undertake for decades. He had always had emotional connections to Trigorin, and especially Constantine. Williams expressed this desire to those around him at the University of British Columbia, where he had a residency in 1980. The play was slated for performance in October 1981 before Tennessee Williams had written the first word.

The Boys Next Door deals with four mentally disabled men who live in a group home. The play consists of brief vignettes about their lives partially narrated and observed by their caretaker. Though the play is quite humorous in its non-mocking way of dealing with the handicapped men in real situations, it also takes a critical look at how mentally handicapped people are treated and looked at by others.
